Oak Keepers of Project Quercus Survey Private Woodlots

General:  Woodlands/Forests

Gregory T. Rajsky and Lisa Haderlein

In the summer of 2008, two dozen volunteer Oak Keepers were trained to survey oak woodlands in a broad ecological assessment. Study sites were plots or assemblages of 50 acres or more, remnants of oak woodlands and savannas extant in McHenry County prior to European settlement (ca 1837), and now privately held. Contributing 164 volunteer hours over the summer, 11 Oak Keepers had monitored 20 sites, with additional study areas targeted for future assessment. They recorded oak species and size; determined canopy cover, understory, ground cover, and invasive species; assessed the overall health of the woods and degree to which oak regeneration was evident. Preliminary findings of the first season’s data collection will be presented.
