Roger Tory Peterson: No Person Left Inside—How one man and his book changed the way we look at the natural world

General:  Birds/Bird Conservation  Volunteers/Community Building/Outreach

Joe Lill
Chicago Audubon Society

Since this is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Roger Tory Peterson, it seems timely to examine his effect on society. His 1934 book, A Field Guide to the Birds, was certainly a landmark in field identification. However, it proved to be even more important from a societal aspect, as it greatly accelerated the inclusion of non-scientists into the fabric of the natural community. A 15-minute DVD produced by the Roger Tory Peterson Institute will review Peterson's life, with the remainder of the program devoted to discussing his continuing influence on nature education and advocacy.
