Twenty-eight Years of Restoration and Monitoring at Somme Prairie Grove

Three decades of restoration at Somme Prairie Grove have produced compelling results in the conservation of endangered plants and rare birds of savanna, woodland and wetland communities. The bur oak woodland called Vestal Grove is one of the oldest restoration efforts of its type; graphs of biennial sampling results tell differing stories, depending on the methods used. Savanna and wetland species have shown best results. Such plant species include prairie white-fringed orchid, eared gerardia, savanna blazing star, and small sundrops. Significant bird species include black-billed cuckoo, wood pewee, and orchard oriole. We compared a variety of sampling techniques to learn which were of most value to restoration decision-making.
