Nesting Biology of Grassland Birds in Northeastern Illinois
General: Birds/Bird Conservation Prairies/Grasslands/Shrublands/Savannas/WetlandsJim Herkert

The nesting period is an important part of a bird's life history. Nesting success can strongly influence population levels and also behavior decisions made by birds. Recent studies of nesting biology in Northeastern Illinois have shown that nest success for grassland birds is relatively low, with a majority of nests failing as a result of predation. These studies have also shown that nest predation rates on grassland birds are generally higher than predation rates on shrubland birds nesting in these same fields and that the nesting season may be longer than generally believed, with nesting extending into August for several species. The implications of these nesting studies for grassland management within the area will be discussed.
