Session: H1
Working with the Government
General: Land Management and Restoration Volunteers/Community Building/OutreachDick Riner and John Elliott
Forest Preserve District of Cook County
The Bartel Grassland restoration project has progressed through the cooperative interaction of government agencies, large scale not-for-profits, and local volunteers. Volunteers brought the initial proposal for funding through the USACOE to the FPDCC. Corlands and Audubon of the Chicago Region managed funding and execution of tile disablement, tree removal, and seeding. FPDCC crews and local volunteers continue the work. In this session we will review the project's complex history, highlight successes, including increasing grassland and wetland bird numbers, and talk about challenges for the future, with an emphasis on the cooperation between the FPDCC and its dedicated volunteers.
