CW's Shrublands: Restoring a forgotten habitat for birds and other animals
General: Birds/Bird Conservation Land Management and Restoration MonitoringBob Fisher and Karen Glennemeier
Bird Conservation Network and Habitat Project
The shrubby grasslands and woodlands of Chicago Wilderness have presented a challenge for restoration ecologists, due to their unique ecology and dynamic pattern on the landscape. However, these communities provide important habitat for birds and other animals, and local ecologists, stewards, and birders have had good success recently in restoring shrubland bird habitat. To determine the status of shrubland birds, the Bird Conservation Network and the Habitat Project collaborated on a three-year study of the breeding shrubland bird species within Chicago Wilderness. The result is a regionwide map of important shrubland bird locations that is being used by land managers and stewards to determine priority sites for shrubland restoration.
