General:  Natural History of the Chicago Region

Richard D. Hyerczyk
Chicago Lichenological Society

Approximately 300 species of lichens in 100 genera are known from the State of Illinois with some 200 species occurring in the Chicago area. The genus Cladonia (fruticose type, pyxie-cup lichens) has the most species with 38 represented throughout the State. The crustose type lichens Caloplaca (dot lichens) and Lecanora (rim lichens) follow with 24 & 14 species represented respectively. Other species numbers within genera range from 10 down to 1. In all, 55% are crustose (crust-like), 30% are foliose (leaf-like) and 15% are fruticose (shrub-like). A brief discussion of the current status of the Illinois lichen flora will be presented as well as habitat requirements and management concerns.
