Wild Things 2009: Conference Sessions
Saturday, February 7, 2009
University of Illinois at Chicago
Session: E1
Ecological Restoration—Building on the Past, Adapting to the Future
Land Management and RestorationJohn D. Rogner, Field Supervisor and Justin Pepper, Deputy Director
The Chicago region has a rich legacy of land protection and has been a center for restoration thinking and practice for over 50 years. Despite our conservation accomplishments, our restoration needs continue to far outstrip available resources and many species and communities remain in a condition of poor health. In light of the "no-analog" future posed by climate change, perhaps the usual generic call for "more" conservation must be accompanied by "more strategic" conservation. This talk will highlight the changing face of conservation and restoration, and showcase a northern Cook County restoration effort that begins to incorporate a strategic, landscape-level approach.
